1. My Religion Play
My Religion
© 2008 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
I’ve been driving for hours, gotta see my show
People think I’m crazy, such a long way to go
Maybe I’m crazy

But I’ve been saving for months just to get to this club
Just to see her on stage, just to feel I’m I love
Maybe I’m crazy

CHORUS:
But I swear, music’s my religion
When I’m there, it feels like I am praying
And I’m not the believing kind, but I’ve heard songs that change my mind
And I’ve heard lyrics speak divine… and that’s my sign

VERSE 2:
Now the lights have gone down, I raise my hands to the sky
My lips know every word, there are tears in my eyes
It’s like she knows me

Now I lose all control, gotta get up and dance
Gotta feel every note, gotta stay in this trance
Oh yeah, she has me

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE:
And if each religion, every sect, uses music to connect—
Gospel choir, tribal dance, eastern meditation chants
Morning mass, temple songs—why can’t we all get along?

VERSE 3:
Now the encore is done, and my feelings are raw
And I know what it feels like to believed in a god
Maybe I’m crazy

REPEAT CHORUS
Lyrics
2. Live. Love. Be. Play
Live. Love. Be.
© 2008 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
Jimmy’s from a small town not too far from here
And people in this small town say “we don’t like your kind here”
And Jimmy became my small-town hero by telling those small-town minds…

CHORUS:
I’m gonna live. I’m gonna love. I’m gonna be.

VERSE 2:
Sarah’s been a city girl, she likes seeing different people all around
But Sarah and her city friends still hear people say “get back to your side of town”
But Sarah and her sisters just won’t take that anymore, they say…

REPEAT CHORUS
I’m gonna live. I’m gonna love. I’m gonna be.

BRIDGE:
Maybe it’s unrealistic anyway
But still I’m optimistic for the day

VERSE 3:
So here I am living in this big bad world
So many people and so many dreams, we all wanna just be heard
And maybe there’s room for everyone if everyone just sings…

REPEAT CHORUS
I’m gonna live. I’m gonna love. I’m gonna be.

ENDING:
I’m gonna live. I’m gonna love. I’m gonna be. (2x)
Just let me live. Just let me love. Just let me be.
Cuz I wanna live. I wanna love. I wanna be.
I’m gonna live. I’m gonna love. I’m gonna be.

3. Sunshine Play
Sunshine
© 2008 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
I know times are tough
I know it’s a little windy outside
I know you feel swallowed up
And spit onto the sidewalk

This ain’t what you signed up for
Well hon, it rarely is
And no one’s gonna pick you up
If you don’t reach out your hand

CHORUS:
It’s okay to take some time, it’s okay to get some space
It’s okay to ask for help, and it’s okay to be afraid
You can ask for some alone time, just take the time for you
Cuz you’re the only one who knows what’s right for you
And sunshine, sunshine, you’ll be fine

VERSE 2:
So you took a risk
So you took the trail that was not marked
So you got a little lost
And you don’t know where you are

But that’s when you find yourself
And that’s when you find a friend
And that’s when you hear your thoughts
Not distracted by the noise

BRIDGE:
And I’m one of the few who will say to you
That it’s okay, it’s okay to be selfish
Cuz I know things get worse when you don’t put yourself first
And say okay, okay, I am taking care of me right now

REPEAT CHORUS
Lyrics
4. My Adventure
My Adventure
© 2008 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
I’d like to go Thailand, see what the food’s really like
I hear it’s cheap over there, I can get by on 10 bucks a night
I wanna see the temples ancient, and know how the villagers live
And sleep by the ocean, and play with the children, just like my cousin did

CHORUS:
This is my adventure calling me, calling me
And you can come too

VERSE 2:
I’m goin’ to Costa Rica, I’d like to plant some trees
And see the rainforest monkeys, and all those 1000s of species
They don’t carry a military, and they value their land
How great it must be to be around people who understand

REPEAT CHORUS

VERSE 3:
I’d like to live in Paris, where they love their art
I’d begin every day with croissants and a coffee, what a way to start
They sit all day at their cafés, just like me
And talk about politics, romance, and feelings… it’s like my dream

REPEAT CHORUS

ENDING:
You can come too
You can come too
Lyrics
5. So Unconventional
So Unconventional
© 2008 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
There was a princess newly single
She didn’t do those princess thingles
She bought old clothes, she wrote down plays
She played in sports—these aren’t things for dames

Across the village lived a prince
A gentle-man who worked with kids
He climbed on rocks, he played his strings
But couldn’t find the girl for him

CHORUS:
She plays soccer, he plays songs
He is soft, and she is strong
And no one could snatch up a better match-up
…So unconventional

VERSE 2:
The thrift store princess got a call
“Meet me at the downtown ball”
She saw the prince, he saw her
The perfect misfits… there they were

He took her out to play on rocks
To see the bands play on the block
He wrote her poems, she shared her plays
They watched the sunset every day

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE:
They’d rather spend their Sundays writing scripts
Well I think that’s where love begins
…love begins

VERSE 3:
Now they’ve got a real good thing
A modern hippy queen and king
He strums her tunes, she makes him kale
They sit and drink organic ale

You’ll find them biking down the block
At farmer’s markets, coffee shops
It’s who they are, a boy and girl
A writer team to save the world

REPEAT CHORUS

ENDING:
No one could snatch up a better match-up
No one could dream-up a better team-up
No one could barter a better partner
… So unconventional

6. Love Letter Play
Love Letter
© 2008 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
Won’t you write me a love letter? Make it real good
Say all those things like a good boyfriend would
Put in your poetry, put in a surprise
Use magic marker, draw hearts on the I’s

CHORUS:
And take me away…
Take me away… to you

VERSE 2:
Won’t you write me a love letter when I’m on the road?
Cuz I’ll need a piece of you to keep in my coat
I’ll read it each morning, I’ll read it each night
You’ll be on my pillow to help me sleep tight

REPEAT CHORUS

VERSE 3:
Won’t you write me a love letter like I used to do?
Cuz no one has written me one… until you
I don’t got a great track record, but I promise I’ll try
There won’t be enough paper for all the love that we’ll write

REPEAT CHORUS
Lyrics

For some reason, the songs I wrote AFTER the release seem to be the crowd favorites.  It figures, huh?  They’re my favorites too, and that’s why I’m so excited to make my next album!

My Religion was inspired at an Alanis concert, where I felt so spiritually moved, I thought “this must be what church is like.”  Live. Love. Be. was written for Pride 2008 (since I played at 7 prides nationwide).  Sunshine has got to be one of the best songs I’ve ever written; it speaks to an emotional truth I’ve been afraid to express in song.  My Adventure lists my travel dreams, and I wrote So Unconventional for my best friend’s wedding.  Love Letter is another dear song to me, as I wrote it when falling in love with my current partner.
