1. The Romantic One
The Romantic One
© 2000 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
My friend, it’s good to see you again
You’re settled down and happy, and I hope that never ends
So why do I feel jealous, like something isn’t right?
For you it came so natural, what I’ve dreamt of all my life

CHORUS 1:
Cuz you are the domestic one who used to only play
And I am the romantic one with no one here today
I think it’s kind of crazy that I can’t have what I want
But I’m finding it’s my time to be alone

VERSE 2:
My friend, you’ve been through so much pain
But through your rocky journey, your union never waned
So why did mine end differently? I thought the bond was strong
While what you have’s not perfect, you have had it all along

CHORUS 2:
Cuz you’re the independent one who’s always had your man
And I am the romantic one who needs a helping hand
I think it’s kind of crazy that I can’t have what I want
But I’m learning now it’s best to be alone

BRIDGE:
Ahhhh Ahhhh
Ahhhh Ahhhh

VERSE 3:
My friend, I’ve always been like you
Comfortable as one, but happier as two
So why have you found love now in a partner who will last
While I just go on looking for what I cannot grasp?

CHORUS 3:
Cuz you are the romantic one, a dreamer just like me
And you have found the one for you while mine has set me free
I think it’s kind of crazy that I can’t have what I want
But I have to now accept that I’m alone

ENDING:
But I wonder when I will not be alone

2. I Just Wanna Be
I Just Wanna Be
© 2000 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
I need a change, can’t stay the same
And I know that you don’t understand, but it’s killing me to stay where I am
I know a place where I’ll be ok
So I’m leaving here to start anew, when I get there I don’t know what I’ll do
But I know…

CHORUS:
I don’t wanna do, I just wanna be
Have a new experience, set my spirit free
I just wanna run from the corner of my mind, and see what I find
I’m not running from, I am running towards
Tackling this challenge with a graceful force
Going for this dream now will put my mind at ease, and give my soul some peace

VERSE 2:
I’ve stayed too long, and now all is wrong
Cuz this place is too familiar to me, and there’s hist’ry here I don’t want to see
I have no fear, of money or career
But it’s obvious that’s foreign to you, cuz you’re asking what I’m going to do
But I say…

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE:
I want to live my life in awe
I want to savor every day
I want to change and learn and grow
And now I’ve found my way

VERSE 3:
Life’s not a plan, the answers aren’t at hand
But no matter what happens inside, at least I’ll know that I tried
Cuz I said…

ENDING:
I don’t wanna do, I just wanna be
Have a new experience, set my spirit free
I’m not running from, I am running towards
Tackling this challenge, with a graceful force

Live my life in awe…
Savor every day…
Change and learn and grow…
Now I’ve found my way

3. Through the Years
Through the Years
© 2000 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
As angry and as hurt as you are
You should know I’ll never stray very far from you
If you give this love a chance you will see
You will never once again be betrayed by me

CHORUS:
Cuz I want you near
And I have no fear
For if we’ve shared so much through our words and our touch
We can work through all these tears
And I promise you…
We will last through the years

VERSE 2:
As hard as you may find to believe
You’ve already touched a place deep inside of me
There’s some things in this life I just know
I’d be absolutely crazy to let you go

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE:
If I ever do doubt you
Baby, all I have to do
Is see the look on your face, hear the words that you say
And I know your love is true (yes I do)

ENDING:
Cuz I want you near, and I have no fear
For we’ve shared so much, through our words and touch
And I won’t let go, when you tell me no
And I’m here to stay, when you… when you run away

And I can see a way through, cuz I’m in love with you

4. It Takes Two
It Takes Two
© 2000 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
I found a man who showed me love again
I let myself fall, I gave it my all with hopes we’d never end
You worked your way in, to the soul beneath my skin
Though it was fast, I want it to last, but you’re giving in

CHORUS:
And I can show you there’s reason to believe,
but I can’t change your mind if you want to leave
It’s all up to you, you know I love you
but it takes two……… It takes two

VERSE 2:
Love’s leavin’ now, and I don’t know how
A bond this strong could not hold on to shed any doubt
What can I do? I’ve tried convincing you
If that’s not enough when things become rough, then maybe we’re through

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE:
It takes two to make the pact, and faith to make it last
It takes two to gain control when chaos does unfold
It takes two to understand and give with open hands
It takes two to live the dream
Yeah, it takes two……… It takes two

VERSE 3:
Now we decide to love or to die
If this is real, the love that we feel, I need you to try

REPEAT CHORUS

ENDING:
Yeah, it takes two……… me and you
Lyrics

Wow, what a feeling it was to write that first song.  It always seemed an unattainable, unfathomable art form. How does someone write a song?!  Well, the songs just started flowing out of me about 3 weeks after I first picked up a guitar in September of 2000.  For that, I thank my high school choir teacher Mr. Snyder for teaching me basic music theory, the incredible female singer-songwriters of the mid-90s who showed me the power of self-expression through music, and Jaime & Andrea for teaching me those first 4 chords!

The Romantic One is about jealousy towards 3 of my friends in relationships while pondering my own hopes for a partner (side note: only 1 of those 3 relationships are still going today!).  I Just Wanna Be was adapted from a poem I wrote about moving to Colorado, my first time moving out of Michigan!  Through the Years and It Takes Two were bittersweet love songs about a rocky yet intense relationship.  They're written for the guy who introduced me to Indigo Girls and bought my first guitar, both of which impacted my music greatly!
