1. Water Rushing
Water Rushing
© 2002 Ryan Mintz

CHORUS:
The water’s rushing through your hands, but you simply can’t hold on.
No matter how hard you try, you can taste it, then it’s gone.
And just like tears we cry, if you learn to let them flow,
Then you’ve learned my greatest challenge… the power to let go.

VERSE 1:
We had a cup of coffee, discussed your changing life.
I heard these words escape your mouth, and I knew you’d be alright.
You painted me an image that I won’t soon forget.
I grabbed my pen and paper to capture what you said. You said…

REPEAT CHORUS
(…the freedom to let go)

VERSE 2:
I was once where you are, but these were not words I knew.
I can see you’re well beyond your years for a man of 22.
You speak of life and love with a mindful moving air,
But when I felt pain like your pain, the loss I couldn’t bear. ‘Til I learned…

REPEAT CHORUS
(…the struggle to let go)

VERSE 3:
We read of spirituality. We listen to our songs.
We’re searching for the answers that graced us all along.
For those who aren’t aware, well I hope they hear our plea:
You must let go of those you love in order to be free.

ENDING:
Yeah, you’ve learned my greatest lesson:
The power to let go. The struggle to let go. The freedom to…

2. Just Don't Ask
Just Don't Ask
© 2002 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
I dread the words “how are you?” that face me every day.
The people ask concern-ed, but at times I’d rather not say.
It’s such a simple question, with a not-so-simple reply.
Are you here to listen? Or are you just being polite?

CHORUS:
Just… don’t… ask.
I’ll tell you when things get better.
As long as you’re here, let’s make one thing quite clear:
Just… don’t… ask.

VERSE 2:
Yeah, so please don’t ask “how are you?” as if you didn’t know.
The answer won’t be different, ‘cuz I’m still feeling low.
I have this need for honesty, and I won’t tell you a lie.
So if I just change the topic, you’ll know the reason why.

REPEAT CHORUS

VERSE 3:
Some people ask “how are you?” without a second thought,
When really they’re indifferent if you’re doing well or not.
I hate the scripted dialogue, and the fakeness it demands.
Cuz if they knew how I really felt, then they’d never ask again.

REPEAT CHORUS

REPEAT CHORUS WITH NEW LYRICS:
…Just… don’t… ask
I’ll tell you when things get better
I was hoping we could concentrate on what’s good.
So just… don’t… ask.

ENDING:
I realize you care, and I’m thankful, I swear.
But just… don’t… ask.

3. So Personally
So Personally
© 2002 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
You go into the corner of your room,
And sit there ‘til you’ve washed away the gloom.
You still haven’t learned that it’s not all about you,
And the things you take so personally were meant for other crew.

CHORUS:
So go ahead and cry. Let them all feel sorry for you.
Go ahead and cry, if that’s the way you solve your problems.
And I’ll stand by your side, waiting for the time
You turn your tears to towers of strength.

VERSE 2:
You walk onto the set that you have chose.
Your life is filled with glamour, I suppose.
You call me up complaining about a life that most would die for.
But still there’s something missing. With you, there always is.

BRIDGE:
Mmm… so personally

VERSE 3:
Everyone’s pursuing their own dream,
Fighting for their vision to be seen.
They say you need a thicker skin, but you’re the one with soul.
Whether you will make it there is all in your control.

REPEAT CHORUS

ENDING:
Mmm… so personally. You really shouldn’t take things…

4. Something to Me
Something to Me
© 2002 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
The calendar page reminded me of a day that I’d rather forget,
The day that brought your face to me, and it still hasn’t left me yet.
Although the time has passed, I still look through the glass,
But the picture I see is not familiar to me. It got twisted in the mess.

CHORUS:
I thought you meant something to me.
Then I come to find you’re not all you seem.
Cuz if the magic we had could disappear so fast,
Then I guess you’re not someone who means something to me.

VERSE 2:
It’s autumn in the city; there’s something in the air.
As the leaves are falling, people are falling in love everywhere.
This is the time of year when the wind whispers your name in my ear,
And I’m hearing the notes of all the music we wrote, and wond’rin’ why you’re not here.

REPEAT CHORUS

VERSE 3:
Your image came last night to me in a dream that’s overdue.
As our paths crossed on the street, I stopped to look at you.
But you didn’t even see the person that was me,
And that’s how I know that it’s time to let go, and set the past free.

REPEAT CHORUS

5. Find Myself
Find Myself
© 2002 Ryan Mintz

VERSE 1:
Sometimes I ask myself what I’m doing here
Sometimes I feel it’s just not me
A man drives by in his flashy car
A woman screams for her Hollywood star

Sometimes the people are so cruel
Sometimes career is more important than making a friend
“Let’s make plans; I think you’re cool”
Phone never rings, and then guess who’s the fool

PRE-CHORUS 1:
But it’s not that I’m giving up yet
I just don’t want to get lost in here, so…

CHORUS:
I’m here to find myself in the pieces that scattered
Cuz nobody else can make me feel like I matter
Starting over is never quite easy
I’m here to find myself

VERSE 2:
Sometimes I wonder why I left that place
Sometimes I miss it all so much
The man who smiled on the street one day
The woman who chatted with me at the café

Oftentimes I felt like I belonged there
Oftentimes I had so many friends around
“Let’s go hiking or sing some tunes,
Dance all night or talk all afternoon”

PRE-CHORUS 2:
But it’s not that I won’t be back
I just need to bring those things here with me, so…

REPEAT CHORUS

VERSE 3:
Sometimes I question if I’ll ever have
Everything I want all at once
A man who’ll love me and my dream career
A woman who’ll listen and my family near

But everytime I get lost in these circles
Of dreaming in the future and the past
I see the place where I’m standing now
Can the peace within combat the pain all around?

PRE-CHORUS 3:
And it’s not that I don’t know who I am
I just need to take a step forward again, so…

REPEAT CHORUS – 2x
Lyrics

2002 was a year of transition from Colorado to California.  Throwing myself into the film biz certainly limited my time to write songs, but the ones I did write cover the range of emotions I experienced that year.  Water Rushing was an attempt to capture a spiritual metaphor described by a friend: that letting go of emotions is like water passing through your hands.  Just Don’t Ask is Meredith’s favourite song; she likes the tongue-in-cheek humour as I forbid the listener from asking that everyday question “How are you?”  So Personally was sparked by a meanie crew member who made me cry on set one day, and the realization that I would have to toughen up to make it in the film biz.  All of my romantic relationships up to this point had started in the fall, and Something to Me captured the rush of feelings I encountered each year as these dates approached.  And Find Myself is a self-musing about why the heck I left lovely Boulder for the craziness of LA!
